American Idol's Lucky Stars | | We’re well into Season 6 of American Idol and the contestants, past winners and even losers, are anything but falling stars.
Simon Cowell may have told Jennifer Hudson she was "out of her league" during Season 3, but the singer rose to the top of the A-List for her role as Effie in Dreamgirls, winning both a Golden Globe and an Oscar this year.
Cowell ate his share of "humble pie," but still had the nerve recently to snap at Hudson for claiming American Idol was a stepping stone when he says it was more like a ladder:
"Singers like her deliberately turn against the show that made them successful. The reason (people) come on the show is because all the doors had been slammed in their face," he said in an interview.
Nonetheless, Jennifer Hudson was not only recognized by the Academy but also by the city of Chicago. Mayor Richard M. Daley honored the star Tuesday saying she is "an inspiration to everyone who has a dream" and declared it Jennifer Hudson Day, as reported by People.com.
Season 3 winner Carrie Underwood may be from small town Checotah, Oklahoma (with a population under 5,000) but she's sold over 5 million copies of her debut album, Some Hearts. The star has also received a Grammy and just earned five Academy of Country Music Awards nominations. Carrie performed on American Idol last night just two days before her 24th birthday.
Also, this week on American Idol, Blake Lewis stood out among the male contestants by adding some alternative flavor to the show by singing "All Mixed Up." Rocker Gina Glocksen showed her true colors, which may have been a bit much for the audience but earned Simon's approval. Melinda Doolittle ended Wednesday's show with a vocal bang, singing "I’m a Woman."
The not-so-lucky contestant is definitely Antonella Barba, who has faced a media frenzy surrounding nude Internet pictures. Her attempt at singing a little Corinne Bailey Rae was a big struggle and the judges were not impressed.
