Each year, over 200,000 American woman are diagnosed with breast cancer. October has been designated national Breast Cancer Awareness month and people are encouraged to show their support by wearing something pink. The disease is so prevalent that most of us know a friend or relative who has suffered from breast cancer. In the past decade concerted efforts have been made to encourage knowledge of the disease and prevention taking measures. Of these, celebrity spokespeople are perhaps the most compelling. They are public proof that breast cancer is a universal concern, as it can strike the rich and poor alike.

Breast cancer is an equal opportunity ailment, and many female celebrities have taken a stand after experiencing it themselves. Melissa Ethridge brought her personal struggle into the public eye not only as a way to bring awareness to the disease, but to show women afflicted by the disease that they are not alone in their fight. Other stars, like Australian sensation Kylie Minogue, know that the simple association of a famous name with the term "breast cancer" encourages women to think about the disease. Hopefully, this leads them to take the advance screening precautions recommended by doctors and specialists.

Songstress Sheryl Crow appealed to politicians on Capitol Hill in March of 07, declaring that "the war on cancer should be won!" She encourages anyone with the disease - or close to someone with it - to donate to cancer research charities. Recently, celebrities worked with Brides Magazine on their "Celebs Go Pink" campaign, which included an exclusive collection of pink wedding gowns from top designers like Vera Wang and Bagdley Mischka. Profits will go to the Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation, which is one of many organizations dedicated to finding a cure and supporting victims.

Certain retailers have made it easy to support finding a cure by donating procedes directly to cancer research and the care of cancer victims. Emitations.com is pleased to join in the fight - when you shop from our breast cancer jewelry section, 25% of the sale will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. We love to provide our shoppers with the chance to look like their favorite celebrities, and now you can support a worthy cause like them as well!
